Thompson, D-Houston, has represented House District 141 since 1973 and is the longest-serving woman and African-American in Texas history. She serves as chairwoman of the House Local & Consent Calendars Committee and as vice chairwoman of the  Select Committee on Economic Competitiveness. Thompson is a founding member of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and is a member of the National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women.
