Laney, D-Hale County, served in the Texas House of Representatives from 1973 to 2007. In 1993, he was unanimously elected speaker of the Texas House, serving until 2003. During his tenure, Laney served as chair of the House Administration and State Affairs committees. He is a practicing attorney and the founder of the Law Offices of J. Pete Laney.
